Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Amscottia  Grönblad  1954;  each of 2 species is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

 

Morphology:

Large unicells 92-189µm long (including ‘arms’) with a narrow isthmus between hemicells.  Each hemicell has two whorls of ‘arms’, a ‘basal’ whorl with 10 arms and a subapical whorl with 6 arms (A. mira) or a single whorl of arms of 8-10 arms curved toward one end of the cell.

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton.  Reported only from Brazil (A. mira) and Northern Territory, Australia (A. gulungulana).
