Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Triploceras  J.W.Bailey  1851;  7 of 63 species are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Green cylindrical unicells, isthmus nearly as wide as cell diameter (only a slight constriction), with several whorls of short mamillate processes along lateral walls of both hemicells.  One elongate chloroplast.

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Somewhat acidic and oligotrophic lakes.  Most species are widespread, others reported only from North Australia and Malaysia (Guiry and Guiry 2013).
