Name derivation:

“Angled colony” – Angled or corner Gonia

Classification:

Gonium O.F.Müller, 1773;  12 of 20 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Goniaceae

Morphology:

Flat colonies where individual cells are all orientated the same way. The individual cells are mostly ovoid and each has two equal flagella and a stigma. They are attached by gelatinous sheaths that surround them.

Habitat:

Cosmopolitan in freshwater, more common in richer waters
