Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Spondylomorum  Ehrenberg  1848;  1 of 2 species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically.

Family Chlamydomonadales;  Family Spondylomoraceae

Morphology:

Stellate or mulberry-shaped colonies of 8 – 16 cells located in 4-celled tiers with no mucilaginous matrix.  Ovoid to pear-shaped cells with a posterior tail.  Four isocontic flagella, two contractile vacuoles and a large cup-shaped chloroplast per cell.

Rarely reported. No culture studies have been carried out, and its existence has been questioned (Guiry and Guiry 2013).
