Name derivation:

“Star beam” or Star ray” – Beam Actin- star -astrum

Morphology:

Green colonies with cells pointed at both ends, radiating from the center of the colony. No obvious mucilage sheath. Individual cells are long, pin like; together they attach to form many radial shapes of spines. One chloroplast per cell.

Found in every climate but arctic and Antarctic, located in eutrophic freshwater.
