Name derivation:

“Transparent hair” or “Invisible hair” – Transparent Aphano- hair -chaete

Classification:

Aphanochaete  Braun  1850;  7 of 25 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chaetophorales;  Family Aphanochaetaceae

Morphology:

Cylindrical filaments that group together to form radially symmetrical shapes. Many can have setae on the upper surfaces.  Contain many branched filaments. Contain a single chloroplast.

Asexual reproduction via zoospores or aplanospores. Sexual reproduction is oogamous (Luther and Hällfors 1981).  Zygote thick-walled, containing reddish to yellowish oil droplets.

Habitat:

Freshwater species found in eutrophic water, sometimes brackish water too all across the globe.
