Name derivation:

“Green sea-fish” – Sea-fish Characio- green –chloris

Classification:

Characiochloris  Pascher  1927;  8 of 15 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Characiochloridaceae

Morphology:

Green colonies of cells often conjoined by mucilage stalks.  Cell shape varies from oviod to spindle or fuiform, with a basal pad (sometimes with flagella protruding) that attaches it to the substratum.  In the presence of abundant iron the pad will take on a red color.

[In phycokey Characiochloris can be found with both green unflagellated unicells and green unflagellated colonies.]

Habitat:

Widely distributed, found in soil but is usually an epiphyte on other freshwater algae.
