Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Chlamydocapsa Fott, 1972;  currently all 6 of 6 described species are taxonomically accepted (Guiry 2012)

Order Tetrasporales;  Family Palmellopsidaceae

 

Morphology:

Spherical or amorphous dense, often laminated gelatinous colony of spherical to oval cells, 7 – 20 µm.

 

Similar genera:

Asterococcus, Chlamydomonoas, Chlorococcum, Gloeocystis

Habitat:

Freshwater or terrestrial soil or moss, organisms from different habitats are given different species descriptions.  Unless specific differences are determined, as by molecular information, it can be accepted that these are ecads (ecomorphs) of a single species.  Similarity to several other ‘saccate
