Classification:

Coenocystis  Korshikov  1953;  8 of 15 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales; Family Radiococcaceae

Morphology:

Colonies with 2N cells, usually <32, embedded in a gelatinous matrix.  Cells ovoid up to 25 µm long, each with one parietal chloroplast and pyrenoid.  No flagellated stage known.

 

Similar genera:

Siderocelis.

 

Habitat:

Diverse freshwater habitats including lakes, bogs and rivers.  Cosmopolitan.
