Name derivation:

“Cross-form” – Cross Cruci- form –genia

Classification:

Crucigenia  Morren  1830;  11 of 70 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013). Order Chlorococcales;  Family Scenedesmaceae

Synonym: Crucigeniella, Dispora (at least in PhycoKey)

Synonym:  Tetrapedia Reinsch 1866 is retained in Crucigenia for lack of evidence of differences.

 

Morphology:

Colonies formed of groups of four individual cells forming a square. The colony is usually flat and embedded in something. Individual cells are oval or somewhat crescent in shape.

 

Similar Genera:

Lemmermannia and Tetrastrum are morphologically similar and are not separated here, although they have been separated on the basis of molecular genetics (Bock et al.  2013).

 

Habitat:

Freshwater. Cosmopolitan.
