Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Dicellula  Svirenko  1926; 1 of 5 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2013).  [I have not yet found Svirenko’s publication.]

Koršikov (1926) has defined some species of Dicellula.

Order Chlorellales;  Family Chlorellaceae or Micractinaceae or Scenedesmaceae.

Siderocystopsis (unicellular may be a synonym (Guiry 2013).

 

Morphology:

Unflagellated groups mainly of 2, occasionally 1 or 4 cells, with numerous small hairs extending outside cell walls.

Similar species:

Franceia has more loosely united cells, compared to the more firm cell unity of Dicellula colonies.

Superficially can be confused with the desmid Cosmarium.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton mainly in eutrophic water.
