Name derivation:

“Two-shaped coccoid cells” – Two Di- shaped –morpho- coccoid cells –coccus

 

Classification:

Dimorphococcus  Braun  1855;  2 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales; Family Scenedesmaceae

 

Morphology:

Flat mat one cell thick, generally round, with short upward branches bearing gametangia with spermatocytes toward the mat perimeter and oocytes toward the center of the mat.

 

Similar genera:

The outer row of cells of Pediastrum duplex have similar two-horned cells.  Similar morphologically to Dictyosphaerium but the individual cells are usually of irregular shapes.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater lakes, both planktonic, aufwuchs, and benthic.  Cosmopolitan, sometimes abundant in peat bogs.
