Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Euastropsis  Lagerheim, 1894;  currently there is one species described and it is accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Hydrodictyaceae

Morphology:

Pairs of trapezoidal or 'eared' cells, flat bases appressed.

Similar genera:

Cell shape closely resembles horned or ‘eared’ cells in the outer ring of Pediastrum colonies.  Zoospore formation, activity and release as a group in ‘sacs’ is also similar to Pediastrum.

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton. Rare relic species observed mainly in six wetland sites (swamps) in boreal mountains of northern Ukraine.
