Classification:

Gloeoactinium  G.M.Smith  1926;  1 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Scenedesmaceae

Morphology:

Green colony of ovate-cuneate shaped cells apposed at their bases in radiating groups of two or four;  several of these groups lie toward the periphery of a wide homogeneous gelatinous matrix (Smith 1950).  A single chloroplast fills each cell.  There is no pyrenoid.

Reproduction is by formation of two or four autospores.
