Name derivation:

"Dense Mucilage Cells" Viscous or Gelatinous Gloeo-, cells –cystis

Classification:

Gloeocystis  Nägeli  1849;  9 of 23 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Radiococcaceae

Morphology:

Colonies surrounded by mucilaginous matrix, generally lamellated (layered)   Rarely found individual cells are spherical with smooth cell walls. Almost always formed in a spherical to amorphous glob of a colony surrounded by a mucus envelope

Similar genera:

Sphaerocystis colonies have a less viscous and non-layered mucilage matrix

Habitat:

Freshwater lake plankton in tropical and temperate climates. Also found on rocks and in soils.
