Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Hormotila  Borzì  1883;  2 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically.

Order class= Tetrasporales;  Family Sphaerocystidaceae

Morphology:

Mucilaginous colony with irregular branches.  Spherical or ellipsoid cells, ! 10 – 20 µm, are scattered through thallus or clustered at ends of branches.  Green cells may become yellow to red with increases in carotenoid content.  Reproduce asexually with autospores or biflagellate zoospores, or fractionation of thallus.

Habitat:

Mainly terrestrial on soil or damp rocks, occasionally in acidic Sphagnum lakes.
