Name derivation:

“Egg-shaped cells” – Egg Oo cells –cystis

Classification:

Oocystis  Nägeli ex A.Braun  1855;  39 of 104 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlorellales;  Family Oocystaceae

Morphology:

Ovoid colony formed of many ovoid cells, 2 to 16 microns, inside a mucus envelope. Cell walls are smooth but may be thicker at the poles of the cells.
