Name derivation:

“Quivering colony” – Quivering motion Palmos

Classification:

Palmella  Lyngbye  1819;  5 of 120 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Palmellaceae

 

Morphology:

Globular colony formed of mostly spherical cells that are green or dark red.  Cell walls form concentric circles around individual cells.

 

Similar genera:

Palmellopsis, observed to turn 'brick red' when cells are older (Guiry and Guiry 2013), currently is not distinguished from Palmella in Phycokey.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater in North America and Europe.
