Name derivation:

“Four rigid cells” or “Four watery cells” – Four Quad- rigid or watery –rigula

Classification:

Quadrigula  Printz  1916;  7 of 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Selenastraceae

Morphology:

Long cylindrical cells single, paired or in groups of four within sheaths form a colony that is unattached but within a mucus envelope. Pyrenoids are not present.

Habitat:

Freshwater lakes in the northern hemisphere.
