Name derivation:

“Four sausages”  --  Four Tetra- sausages –allantos

Classification:

Tetrallantos  Teiling  1916;  all three species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Scenedesmaceae

Morphology:

Individual lunate cells form together in groups of two or four in either a ring shape or connected at one pole to form a claw- shape. Very rare for colonies to be larger than 16 cells.

Habitat:

Freshwater found on all continents but Antarctica, in temperate and warm waters.
