Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Tetrasporidium  Möbius  1893;  the single species description is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales   Family Palmellopsidaceae

 

Morphology:

Similar but much larger and more complex than colonies of Tetraspora.  Colonies with thousands of cells embedded in copious mucilage have been found as long as 30 cm.  See Guiry and Guiry (2013) for more detail.
