Classification:

Tetrastrum  Chodat  1895;  11 0f 25  species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales   Family Scenedesmaceae

Morphology:

Green coenobial colony with four cells in one plane up to 23 µm in diameter.  Occasionally a compound colony with 16 cells.  Mucilage envelope may be present.  Cells may have two or three spines as long as 46 µm.
