Name derivation:

Chaetonema Nowakowski [Nowakovsky]  1876;  2 species are described and accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2012)

Order Chaetophorales;  Family Aphanochaetaceae

 

Morphology:

Branched uniseriate green filaments.  Terinal cells often are drawn out into ‘hairs’.

 

Similar genera:

Habitat:

Epibiotic on or in mucilage of other ‘algae’. e.g. Batrachospermum, Chaetophora and Tetraspora  (Guiry 2012)
