Name derivation:

Branch bearer (clad or klados -- a branch; phora or phoros -- bearer)

Classification:

Cladophora  Kützing  1843;  183 of 1,057 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2013)

Class Ulvophyceae;  Order Cladophorales

Synonym:  Conferva Linnaeus, 1753

Morphology:

Numerous branches, numerous small chloroplasts that fill cells, end cells of branches taper.

Similar genera:

Pithophora has fewer branches, and Rhizoclonium has even fewer branches.  Several species once consigned to Conferva are now reassigned to Cladophora.

Habitat:

Epilithic, freshwater, brackish and marine, bicarbonate buffered.
