Name derivation:

Classification:

Chloniophora  Tiffany 1936;  6 of 8 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2012).

Order Ulvales;  Family Chloniophoraceae

 

Morphology:

Branched uniseriate green trichomes.  Cells in secondary branches are shorter than those in primary branches.  Terminal cells conical or blunt tipped.  Biflagellate zoospores develop in lateral granch cells. Attached to a substrate.

 

Similar genera:

Chaetophora.

 

Habitat:

Tropical freshwater to brackish water.
