Classification:

Gomontia  Bornet and Flahault  1888;  7 of 11 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Ulotrichales;  Family Gomontiaceae

 

Morphology:

Heteromorphic alternation of generations.  Branched green filaments as a haploid gametophyte attached to a calcareous substrate, and a large (up to 250 μm diameter) unicellular sporophyte with rhizoidal extensions that attach to a calcareous substrate.

Habitat:

Attaches to calcareous substrates such as mollusk shells.
