Gongrosira  Kützing  1843; 21 of 30 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chaetophorales;  Family Chaetophoraceae

Synonym Pleurastrum

Morphology:

Branching green heterotrichous (horizontal and vertical) filaments often with a crust of lime (photosynthesis increases alkalinity of surrounding water, descreasing solubility of CaCO3).  Biflagellate zoospores (planospores) have an eyespot.
