Order Chlorellales; Family Leptosiraceae
Pleurastrum is conisered a synonym in Phycokey, as it
species, demonstrated to be polyphyletic, are similar. Pleurastrum is
primarily terrestrial, found on wet soil.

Morphology: |

Short
trichomes with short branches. One
chloroplast without a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction includes release of a
small vesicle containing 20 – 60 zoospores (swarmers). |

Similar genera: |
||||
Pleurastrum is morphologically similar but has a pyrenoid associated
with its chloroplast per cell. Leptosiropsis has a chloroplast with
an encircling pyrenoid. |

Habitat: |
||||
Freshwater
epiphyte on other ‘algae’ such as Coleochaete. |
