Microthamnion Ngeli  1849;  4 of 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Microthamniales;  Family Microthamniaceae.

 

Morphology:

Upright uniseriate branching filaments.  Similar to many branching greens, the branches arise near the upper ‘younger’ end of the axial cells where the cellulosic walls are thinner.

Habitat:

Freshwater, widely distributed.
