Morphology:

||||
Undivided
monostromatic green blades up to 15 - 45 mm across,
with a pluriseriate stipe. Cells generally rectangular, 5 – 9 μm in diameter. |

Similar
genera:

||||
Prasiolopsis, Pseudopleuococcus and Schizogonium
Kutzing 1843 are not separated from Prasiola
in PhycoKey. Recent
genetic work has also suggested Schizogonium is similar to Prasiola
(Rindi et al. 2007). |

Habitat:
|
||||
Terrestrial,
widespread in temperate to polar regions, thriving near sources of fixed
nitrogen (urine, bird guano). Also
marine upper tidal zone, epilithic, especially
robust near sources of bird guano. |
