Classification:

Protoderma  Kützing  1843;  8 of 12 species descriptioins are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry).

Order Chaetophorales;  Family Chaetophoraceae

Morphology:

Uniseriate compace filaments forming a single-layered pseudoparenchymatous circular expansion.  Central cells compressed and polygonal, more peripheral cells cylindrical.  Parietal chloroplast sometimes with a pyrenoid.

Similar genera:

Pseudendoclonium, Stigeoclonium (John 2011).

Habitat:

Freshwater and marine epiliths and epiphytes.
