Classification:

Wittrockiella  Wille  1909;  7 of 8 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiy and Guiry 2014).

Order Cladophorales;  Family Pithophoraceae

Synonym: Cladophorella

 

Morphology:

Green highly branched thallus, branches arising on lateral cell walls.  Highly reticulate chloroplasts,, many pyrenoids per cell.  Rhizoids are differentiated from branches.  Rhizoids have denser chloroplasts and hematochrome producing yellow or orange thalli.  Colorless hairs may also be present (Guiry 2013).

Habitat:

Widely distributed, tropical to temperate low to medium salinity in saltmarshes, epiphytic, occasionally epipelic (on mud).
