Classification:

Chaetomorpha Kützing, 1845;  66 of 111 species are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Cladophorales;  Family Cladophoraceae

 

Morphology:

Green unbranched uniseriate filaments (trichomes), and is a free-living organism, or it is attached at the base by rhizoids.  Cells are cylindrical with flat, relatively thick plate-like walls, and has several pyrenoids protein within or adjacent to reticulate chloroplasts.  Cell size varies widely from 20 μm to 5 mm.

Often forms extensive mats of intertwined trichomes.

Produces biflagellate gametes, some repeat gametophytic stage parthenogenically.

Habitat:

Wide distribution in marine and brackish sites, rarely in freshwater.
