Geminella  Turpin  1828;  9 of 19 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlorellales;  Family Chlorellaceae

 

Morphology:

Filaments of pseudofilaments (in which cells are not closely appressed) embedded in a thick gelatinous sheath.  One parietal or laminate chloroplast with a single pyrenoid per cell.

 

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton in marshes and shallow lakes.  Has been reported as an epiphyte or aufwuchs (sitting upon but not firmly attached), or even from a terrestrial site.
