Morphology: |
||||
Short unbranched trichomes with few
cells, no branches, with minimal contact between adjacent cells. One
relatively large chloroplast per cell. The cells are cylindrical and
elongated with thin walls, and have a parietal chloroplast..
Reproduction (asexual) is through fragmentation and cell division. |

Similar genera: |
||||
Klebsormidium has pyrenoids while Stichococcus lacks them. Ulothrix
has broad contact between adjacent cells. |

Habitat: |
||||
Grows
in a wide range of habits; found in marine, freshwater, or soil-free
surfaces. Even grows on snow (cryobiotic) in Antarctica causing a light-green
coloration. |
