Name derivation:

Tail (uro-) thread (-nema)

Classification:

Uronema Lagerheim  1887;  16 of 22 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2015).

Order Chaetophorales;  Family Chaetophoraceae

Morphology:

Unbranched green trichomes with one parietal ‘wrap-around’, ‘napkin-ring’ chloroplast per cell.  Trichomes are attached by a basal cell with a slightly curved apex Cross-walls are flat, providing maximal contact between adjacent cells.

Similar genera:

Stichococcus is similar but has minimal contact between cells.

Habitat:

Grows Attached, widespread in freshwater.  Grow epiphytically on larger filaments such as Oedogonium and Cladophora, and on aquatic plants.
