Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Palmogloea  Kützing 1843;  1 of 39 species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlorococcales;  Family Coccomyxaceae

 

Morphology:

Dark green blade-like thallus up to 10 cm in length, irregularly lobed, a small spike.  The surface is smooth with a gelatinous appearance and a thick corrugated margin.  The inner structure comprises a mass of unorganized microscopic cells (online description by aquaportail.com).

Habitat:

Marine benthos at depths of 20 to 30 m.  The geographic origin of Palmogloea is relatively limited.  P. protuberans is present in Australia (Queensland), New Zealand and especially in the islands of Pacific French Polynesia, including Tuamotu.
