Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Bryopsis J.V. Lamououx, 1809, 56 of 223 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Bryopsidales; Family Bryopsidaceae

 

Morphology:

Siphonous unicell with large number of nuclei, height 2 – 40 cm.  Feather-shaped thallus.  Asexual reproduction by fragmentation or aplanospores.  Sexual reproduction with biflagellate anisogametes in pinnae separated from remainder of thallus by a ‘plug’ at the base.  May be dioecious or monoecious.  Heteromorphic alternation of generations (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

The only septa separating portions of the organism are at the base of reproductive branches (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

 

Similar genera:

Valoniopsis:  Bryopsis pachynema is now V. pachynema.

Trichosolen:  Bryopsis duchassaingii (syn. B. antillarum) is now T. duchassaingii (Ibid.).

Habitat:

Marine benthos, polar to topical, temperature range 5 to 27C, depth to 5 m (Ibid.).
