Codium Stackhouse 1797;  143 of 286 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

 

Morphology:

Siphonous unicell, spongy, with colorless siphons, septa at the base of reproductive branches or wounds.  Utricles are swollen tips on siphons with discoid chloroplasts (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Habitat:

Mainly temperate to subtropical marine benthos.
