Name derivation:

 

Classification:

 Halimeda  J.V. Lamouroux, 1812;  44 of 133 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Morphology:

 Siphonous (coenocytic) unicell with series of flattened plates that are calcified, alternating with non-calcified nodes.  Height can exceed 1 m.  New plates increase at the apex.

Habitat:

 Warm marine environments, wide distribution, intertidal to 150 m depth where it is adapted to low light intensity (~ 0.05 % surface intensity).
