Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Coccomonas  Stein  1878;  2 of 2 described species are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Volvocales;  Family Phacotaceae

 

Morphology:

Green biflagellate unicells each with a lorica often heavily stained with iron oxide that obscures the chloroplast, and sometimes encrusted with marl (CaCO3).

 

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton, widespread, rarely abundant.
