Name derivation:

“Small monad” or “Small flagellate” – Small Micro- monad –monas

Classification:

Micromonas  I. Manton and M. Parke  1960;  one of two species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014.

Order Mamiellales;  Family Mammiellaceae

Morphology:

Uniflagellate solitary cells, 1 -3 um in length, appearing ovoid to ellipsoidal with a protoplast attached to the cell wall with thin branched cytoplasmic strands.  Contains only one mitochondrion and is driven by photosynthesis.  It is propelled by single flagella and is pear shaped. There is no cell wall present.

Requires clearer water so it is able to photosynthesize.
