Classification:

Phacotus  Perty  1852;  13 of 24 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry  2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Phacotaceae

 

Morphology:

Green biflagellate unicells, compressed lorica with two sections that may stain brown with iron oxide deposit.  Plasma membrane smaller than lorica, leaving a clear border.  Cells contain two contractile vacuoles near base of flagella.

Freshwater, widely distributed.
