Classification:

Scourfieldia  G.S.West  1912;  7 of 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Polyblepharidales;  Family Prasinophyceae (Ettl  1983).

 

Morphology:

Flagellated, naked unicells, flattened, ellipsoid o almost rectangular.  Anisokont (different length), two flagella.  Two contractile vacuoles near base of flagella  Single cup-shaped chloroplast without stigma and pyrenoid.  No non-flagellated stages have been reported (Nozaki 2003).

Habitat:

Freshwater.  Wide pH range from peat bogs to alkaline lakes.
