Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Characium  A. Braun in Kützing  1849;  38 of 93 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Characiaceae

 

Morphology:

Shapes range from almost spherical to needles, often attached to a subtrate with a basal pad. Unicells containing chloroplasts.

 

Similar genera:

Hydrianum looks the same, differs in some details, and here is considered to be a synonym of Characium.

Habitat:

Mostly freshwater but some species have been found in soils ranging from arctic to tropics.
