Morphology:

||||
Shapes range from almost spherical
to needles, often attached to a subtrate with a
basal pad. Unicells containing chloroplasts.

Similar genera:
|
||||
Hydrianum looks the same, differs in some details,
and here is considered to be a synonym of Characium.

||||
Habitat:
|
||||
Mostly freshwater but
some species have been found in soils ranging from arctic to tropics.
