Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Coccomyxa  Schmidle  1901;  21 of 34 described species are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2013).

Order Chlorococcales;  Family Coccomyxaceae or Trebouxiophyceaed (Calisová et al. 2011).

Morphology:

Green non-flagellated colonies or unicells surrounded by viscous laminated layers of secreted mucilage.

 

Similar genera:

 

 

Habitat:

Generally terrestrial, temperate to polar zones, either free-living as jelly-like masses on mosses and rocks, but also symbionts of Ginkgo, and symbionts of fungi to form lichens.  In addition some species are endobionts (as parasites) in mussels; psychrophilic although maximum growth rate is at ~20 C (Blanc et al. 2012).
