Classification:

Echinosphaeridium  Lemmermann  1904; both two species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Neochloridaceae

Morphology:

Green spherical unicells up to 24 µm diameter bearing a single large chloroplast and up to 40 outward-directed spines each 35 – 55 µm long, with narrowly conical bases.

Similar genera:

Golenkinia has a mucilaginous envelope.  Echnosphaeridium is marine.

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton
