Oophila (Chlorophyceae)

Oophila sp.

Cells growing symbiotically in gel surrounding embryonic ambystomatid salamander. Modified from images posted by Renn Tumlison (left image online) and Tobias Landberg (right image), Department of Biology, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, AR USA . According to both Landberg and Tumlison, the Unicells elevate oxygen levels for the embryo (at least during the daytime) while absorbing nitrogen (probably as ammonium ion) released as waste from the embryo.
