Classification:

Stylosphaeridium  Geitler and Gimesi  1925;  1 of 6 species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Chlorangiellaceae

 

Morphology:

Green unicells with a relatively long stipe extending from apical end, attached to mucilage substrate (usually a cyanobacterial colony).  Cells have a cup-shaped chloroplast and one pyrenoid.  Produce biflagellate zoospores during asexual reproduction.

Habitat:

Freshwater epiphytes and epizooites, usually on planktonic colonial cyanobacteria such as Microcystis spp. embedded in mucilage.
