Name derivation:

"Four-pointed cell" (tetra- four, -edron seat, dwelling)

 

Classification:

Tetraedron  Kützing  1845;  43 of 123 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Hydrodictyaceae

 

Morphology:

Unicell with an irregular outline, and four or five principal "points" on the corners

Similar genera:

Pseudotetraedron Pascher 1912 is not separated from Tetraedron in PhycoKey.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater habitats
